Trouble in Kabul

Blurb from Boston.com:
KABUL, Afghanistan –Violent anti-foreigner protests raged across the capital Monday after a U.S. military truck crashed into traffic, touching off the worst rioting since the Taliban’s ouster. At least eight people died and 107 were injured before Kabul’s streets calmed.
Let’s take a look at this. In a nutshell, these guys are protesting. As a result of what? A U.S. military truck crashing into traffic. Accidentally.
“We don’t want Americans in our country. They don’t care about poor people. They killed innocent people today and this is not the first time,” said Abdul Shakoor, a 28-year-old who joined in the protests after Monday’s traffic accident. “They do it all the time and in the end they say it was a mistake. It’s not acceptable to us anymore.”
Now, I can understand these guys getting mad because a foreign truck crashed into their traffic and killed their people. But when rioters come up and twist it to make it sound like it was intentionally done, it just makes me tick. I seriously doubt that the U.S. military would drive a truck into traffic and blow it up. They do not sacrifice their lives in this way, because they have more dignity for it. The military apologized for the accident, citing it as “tragic”. I guess you could say sorry isn’t enough, but to twist the story in this way just makes it terrible.

Seems like quite the load has hit my level of interest this week. Here we go:
The Senate approved a bill that would increase the minimum wage in Massachusetts. Currently, it is at $6.75 per hour. By September 1st of this year, it would increase to $7.50, and by September 1st of 2007, it would increase to $8.25. Just like everything else that exists in this world, there is a good side and a bad side to this. The good is obvious: we’re guaranteed higher pay. The bad is that businesses, especially small businesses, will have to pay more for their workers, which could lead them to hire less people (and have those people do more work) or raise the price of their products. The Boston.com article refers to New Hampshire having a much lower minimum wage and therefore being more competitive with their products because they can charge less for them. You can go ahead and read up on all that…
That gas tax repeal thing that Kerry Healey suggested was shot down. As much as it would’ve been a temporary relief, seeing gas go down by 21 cents for even a day would be nice. They need to make some sort of law that freezes the price of gas at $3.00, then bring it down slowly. I seriously doubt that these gas companies are raising prices to combat financial losses of any sort. Concerning oil, I wish they also just drilled for oil in Alaska. If it could lower the price of oil AND lower our dependence on foreign oil, I’d go for it. It’s a weird issue, though, since it would only serve as a temporary solution.
From CNN: The Senate approved a bill that would ban protests within 300 feet to the entrance of a cemetery and 150 feet of a road into the cemetery, during the duration of 60 minutes before to 60 minutes after a funeral. Violators of this could be faced with up to an $100,000 fine and up to a year in prison. The act is called the “Respect for America’s Fallen Heroes Act”. CNN posted a picture of the guy that held the “Thank God for dead soldiers” sign. I think that this act is a good idea, and the fact that it came without any senator against it shows how good of an idea it was. We don’t need anti-gays saying that they’re thankful that someone is DEAD. Dead, I say. When someone’s dead, you let them rest. You don’t protest them. I think that protesting against someone who has died, during their funeral, is the most inhumane and rude thing you could do. If you really don’t like the person, how about you just not attend the funeral at all? That works a lot better and is much more dignified.

Friday, 19th – Junior Prom
My Pictures
When I made that sign that said going to the best party all year would be priceless, I didn’t know for sure that it would be the best party. But after going to the prom, I must say that it’s a very true statement. The prom was held at the Lantana. When I walked in, I felt the familiarity of the place, as it was where one of my cousins got married. The Lantana has 5-6 separate dance rooms, and ours was like Norwandy or something like that. The dance floor was smaller than I thought it was going to be, but it was large enough for the 110 people that bought tickets. I saw my friends all dressed up…it was so great. I couldn’t stop smiling at my own appearance in a tux (and no, I’m not a narcissist).
We spent about an hour or so waiting for people to show up, and they did, slowly. We ate at around 8, and as soon as it hit 9, we were dancing for the rest of the night. I was iffy about dancing at first, but eventually I went and followed the crowd. I started slow, but by time the DJ went with “Lean Wit It” and “Laffy Taffy”, I was REALLY into it. I slow danced with two people, and spent most of my time around 10 or so people. Overall, it was fun, and everybody that didn’t go REALLY missed out. Everyone that went will tell you that; trust me!
Saturday, 20th – Cousin’s birthday party
More like a gathering. It was relatively boring. I got a hamburger, some rice and jerk chicken (I LOVE jerk chicken), and then some cake. It began to get cold later. It was okay overall, I guess, but I was still feeling sleepy from prom, ya know?
Sunday, 21st – Church, nothing else.
So that’s it for this weekend. Enjoy the new layout.

Digg: A “Zero Energy Home” in Oklahoma
Filed Under Link, Tech | Leave a Comment
Digg description
The first zero energy home costing less than $200,000 has been built in Oklahoma. This house produces as much energy as it consumes in a year and combines “renewable energy technologies with advanced energy-efficient construction.” This environmentally friendly house is just a prototype and not yet available for sale.
Hmmm…the solar panel thingys look a little weird on the house, but besides that it’s a cool read. More pictures here.
