Move Back!

So I had an interesting few minutes on the bus. As much as the guy was weird and a little scary, he had a point.

Today, there was a guy waiting for the bus with me. When I got on the bus, I moved to a certain point, then stopped. He said excuse me, so I moved back a little then stopped again. I moved aside to let him go into the back, and he told me to move further, saying that I shouldn’t be embarrassed or nervous about it and that there’s space.

He told me that everyone should make space for people on the bus so we have the best experience possible. He started to say some more crazy things though, like calling the people that congregated in the front of the bus “motherfuckers”, except for the old people who he said he had all respect for (that makes him crazy, but rational). He told me that the person with the carriage could not get on the bus because the driver thinks the bus is full because of all the people standing in the front. The honest fact, though, is that the bus is not full because there is “plenty of space” in the back of the bus for people to stand. The guy had a serious point but he delivered it in such a way that scared me. He suggested having a water gun to spray people that didn’t move back, and that began to freak me out (he first said “I wish I had a weapon”; it was a watered down scare when he suggested a water gun).

This makes me think on two different levels, one being too personal to state here. On the level that I will speak of, though, people do need to save space for others on the bus. Stop putting your bag in the seat next to you if you know the bus is going to fill up. If there’s a space to sit, sit, don’t stand; other people are going to come on the bus that will need to stand. Stand as far back on the bus as you can so that the buses can bring a maximum load. Maximum loads are somewhat uncomfortable but it makes everyone less late for their appointments. As much as some buses don’t come often enough, it also is our job as the consumers and riders to make a little room for other people and help each other out.
