On Politics

I have many an opinion about our political system and the way it works. So I don’t confuse you, let me start by saying that I don’t like it. The two party system, I believe, is oversimplified. There are not two sides to every story, and two sides certainly cannot cover every possible opinion that people can have. People should not just stand on one side of the fence and dislike what’s on the other side of the fence even if they don’t see it.

There should be no such thing as “being a Democrat” or “being a Republican”. There should be no such thing as lobbyists. There should be no such thing as scare tactics or tarnishing another person’s name. Candidates should say, “Hi, I’m candidate X, and this is what I’ll bring if elected”. Process of elimination shouldn’t cut it; candidate X should not say “vote for me because candidate Y is bad”.

I wish the lesser-known candidates could have a little of the star power and could be given a bit of the star power by the media. Candidates like Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich should have gotten more attention because they strongly stood for their values, and quite frankly, people can’t hold as much against them as they can against people including but not limited to McCain, Clinton, or Romney. We have too much dirt digging in politics. Things from the 80s and 90s shouldn’t matter unless they are part of a repeated behavior. A change in view from 1994 to 2007 shouldn’t matter. In 13 years, I’m sure you might have changed your view on something.

Another thing that bothers me is how some people are indifferent to what happens. While these things do not always directly affect you, it affects the country you live in, the course of action it will take, and overall, the way people look at Americans. I don’t want a president or a legislature that will take us down the wrong path, because it will personally affect me one way or another, and if not, it makes our country look worse in the big picture. Political news is everywhere, and people should at least read or listen to what’s happening and make an informed decision concerning who to vote for. I honestly don’t care who you vote for; I just hope that you’ll vote. Voting is our civic duty, and we should be more than willing to go to a building and check off a name on a ballot, a simple operation that has so many complex results.
