Since taking office in 1993, Tom Menino has done a lot for this city. The schools are much better. The streets are safer. The city is prettier. A lot of people like him – 72 percent of respondents in an April survey.
But 15 years is a really long time of not just unbroken rule, but of unchallenged rule. Despite the fact that the city isn’t yet perfect, Menino hasn’t had a serious race since the one that first got him elected.
Abraham brings up a valid point, one worth reading and thinking about. Should any politician, no matter how good they are, be allowed to go for so long without contest from anyone else? A sense of complacency begins to form. The person in power has way too much clout. People do not even think of running against the person because it would be (or seems to be) a waste of time and money. Thinking about this makes me change my mind about the two term Presidential limit. I think that should be extended to every major executive office, now. Change keeps our society fresh with new ideas and methods. If we do not challenge leaders, even good leaders, they will become complacent and do less for us as time goes on.
Other than the replacing Menino part, I agree with her on all counts. I don’t think Menino necessarily has to be replaced, but he does need a challenge. Only through challenge do we as people and societies get better. If there’s no contest, there’s no reason to improve.
