Public health officials in Massachusetts have unanimously voted that restaurants be required to post their calorie counts on their menus. They are hoping that this decision leads consumers to make more health-conscious decisions.

I am happy that they are moving to put calorie counts on menus. One commenter suggested that it will only apply to chains with 20+ restaurants, so additional menu printing costs may not even be a big deal. Burger King and McDonald’s, at least, already have their nutrition facts online. But of course, not everybody goes to read them. Putting them on the menus would allow everyone to see them. It would be good to know, up front, how loaded they are. It would help for people who are trying to keep track of their calories. Such a decision would also allow people to make a more informed decision about their eating habits.

It’s at least worth a shot to try adding calorie counts to menus; if it really goes wrong, the companies can clamor about it and hopefully the health board will change their mind.
