Among the 869 sundry amendments to the Massachusetts House budget bill is a proposal, sponsored by Rep. James Miceli, to reinstate capital punishment in the Commonwealth. “A capital idea!,” you say? “A real savings for the beleaguered Massachusetts taxpayers!,” you hope? Well, I wouldn’t bank on it.

Ironically, the death penalty does indeed cost more than putting someone in prison for life, mostly because of possible appeals. I would agree with James Alan Fox here and say that instating the death penalty is a big no-no because of monetary reasons. Also, it’s irreversible, and that’s just way too risky in my eyes.

A former Harvard University senior is facing 20 criminal charges for allegedly creating a fraudulent life history that led to his admission to Harvard, and for using forged academic materials from Harvard when he applied for the prestigious Rhodes and Fulbright scholarships.

Just shameful. I hope he has to pay all that money back to the schools and organizations that awarded it to him, because he truly did “steal” it. Even worse, he took the spot of someone who probably legitimately could have gone to the school.
